China secured a 2-1 win against Haiti to kick off their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup with three points on Monday.
It was Haiti's first ever match at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup, and the newcomers made a positive start.
Zhao Yujie and Shen Mengyu scored in each half to hand China a two-goal advantage, with Haiti captain Nerilia Mondesir scoring her country's first World Cup goal through a penalty.
"It was a typical opening match," China's head coach Peter Bonde told Xinhua.
"We should have closed the game out in the first half. We are a young team and we became nervous, but we deserved the victory," said Bonde, showing his full respect for the tournament's newcomers.
