More Chinese films are expected at the Berlinale 2019

The 69th Berlin Film Festival, also known as Berlinale, on Thursday announced a list of additions to its competition category selections with the entry of two more Chinese films.

“So Long, My Song” (“Di Jiu Tian Chang” in Chinese) directed by Wang Xiaoshuai and “Öndög” directed by Wang Quan'an were among those in the announcement. A total of 11 films have been added to the list for the competition category, while six more were added to the Berlinale Special.

The Berlinale announced a list of nine films for the competition category and is expected that more would be added soon.

Besides the two Chinese films in the competition category, Zhang Yimou's new film “One Life” also has the chance of making the entry, according to Chinese media reports. It would be Zhang Yimou's fifth film to enter the Berlinale, aside from “Red Sorghum,” “The Road Home,” “Hero,” and “A Simple Noodle Story.”

The “Red Sorghum,” based on a novel by the Chinese Nobel laureate Mo Yan, took home the Golden Bear Award at the 38th Berlinale.

In 2014, another Chinese film “Black Coal, Thin Ice” grabbed the Golden Bear Award at the 64th Berlinale while its leading actor Liao Fan took home the Silver Bear for Best Actor as well.

The 69th Berlin Film Festival will begin on February 7, 2019.
