Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday expressed China's support for multilateralism, the central role of the UN in international affairs and the work of the UN Secretary-General.
Wang made his remarks when attending the working breakfast meeting of foreign ministers of permanent members of the UN Security Council and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
He noted the UN Security Council, especially the permanent members, has an important responsibility to maintain international peace and security.
The five countries should be aware of their special responsibilities, maintain the stability and continuity of their own policies, take the lead in abiding by the UN charter and international agreements, he added.
Wang also said the five permanent members should strengthen coordination and communication, promote unity and cooperation and respond to the universal expectations of the international community.
The five foreign ministers during the meeting also exchanged views with Guterres on the Korean Peninsula situation, Syria, Iran nuclear deal and other international issues of common concern.
