China's research vessel Kexue (Science) started on Tuesday to explore a series of seamounts in the south of the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on Earth.

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) of the vessel had photographed several "seabed gardens" with colorful corals and sponges in a seamount of Mariana Trench.

Kexue is carrying out a 20-day investigation over a series of seamounts in the south of the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean.

Scientists planned to investigate four seamounts in this area, and the largest one is the Caroline Seamount, which Kexue explored in 2017, said Xu Kuidong, chief scientist aboard the vessel and a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
