Deadly wildfires claimed 93 lives outside Athens in late July. But the devastation has not stopped. Dioxin, heavy metals and furan, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons among other toxins, were found in charred debris. These pollutants harm the air, water and soil. Experts have urged residents and workers participating in clean-up efforts to be careful when dealing with ashes from the fire.
