Top-ranked Simona Halep of Romania on Monday withdrew from the Connecticut Open with leg pain, one day after she lost the Cincinnati final to Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands.
The Romanian, who won the Rogers Cup in Montreal on August 12, was scheduled to play Tuesday during the Connecticut Open, but she said in a statement “two weeks of many matches, and I need to recover in time for the US Open.”
The hard-court WTA tour makes its annual stop at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Connecticut, which is also the final tune-up for professional female tennis players before the US Open in New York. This year, the New Haven tournament is scheduled from August 19 through August 25.
The tournament also lost American CoCo Vandeweghe to injury. She withdrew Sunday with a sore right ankle while leading in the third set of her first-round match with Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia.
