The Rhone Glacier is protected by special white blankets to prevent it from further melting as a result of global warming. Located in the Alps, it was the largest glacier in Europe several thousand years ago, but now it has shrunk to be the fifth in Switzerland. In the past century, the glacier has retreated 1,400 meters.
