The Armory Show 2019 kicks off in New York

Nearly 200 galleries from 33 countries and regions brought together a presentation of modern and contemporary artwork in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday for the 25th edition of The Armory Show, a premier international art fair in New York City.

As the four-day event covers the date of the International Women's Day on March 8, many exhibitors are devoting their booths to presentations by leading contemporary female artists across several generations.

The highlights of the fair include Star Ceiling, a 75-foot-long (about 23 meters), immersive LED installation hanging above a dark passageway. The undulating monochromatic field of light evokes scenes and imagination of shooting stars, galaxies and other cosmic phenomena and is the largest digital media work presented at the fair in its 25-year history.

The installation, created by New York-based light artist Leo Villareal, is presented by the Pace Gallery, a leading contemporary art gallery with 10 locations worldwide, including one in Beijing and two in Hong Kong.

An array of dedicated talks featuring globally renowned artists, curators, collectors and art practitioners will be staged throughout the four-day event to discuss the significant developments in production, experience, criticism and patronage in the arts over the last 25 years.

Over 70 prominent curators from around the world will also gather to talk about the role of history in present curatorial work and artistic practice.

Founded in 1994, The Armory Show has been a cultural destination for thousands of international visitors. It also anchors Armory Arts Week, a citywide program including gallery and museum openings, events and performances.
