The USS Hornet was located by the R/V Petrel research ship near the Solomon Islands. The Hornet was sunk during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in 1942. It went down nearly 24 hours after being attacked by Japanese dive bombers and torpedo planes. 140 out of its crew of 2,200 had died. The Petrel expedition used archival data from other U.S. warships to create a research grid, and the ship's autonomous underwater vehicle was deployed after a scan revealed a sizable object.
