Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Tuesday that the case of Michael John Kovrig, a Canadian citizen who has been in detention in China since December, is still under investigation.
"Canadian citizen Michael John Kovrig is suspected of engaging in spying activities that endanger China's national security including the theft of state secrets," Lu said at a regular press briefing. "Whether the case involves any Chinese national is now under investigation in accordance with the law."
The spokesman noted that "important progress" has been made in the investigation of the case.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said last December that Kovrig may have violated Chinese law if he carried out activities in the country because his current employer, the International Crisis Group (ICG), is not legally registered in China.
Kovrig worked with Canada's Foreign Ministry between 2010 and 2016. He has been working as a senior adviser with ICG since 2017.
