A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture's Xichang City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, around 4:29 p.m. Beijing time on Wednesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. 
Strong tremors were felt in the downtown area of the city, according to the Sichuan Earthquake Administration.

The area's communication system has also been interrupted due to the earthquake. 
The tremors also jolted nearby cities such as Ya'an and Chengdu. 
There have been no reports so far of casualties or damage.
The local earthquake administration has activated the emergency response system after the earthquake. 
A working group has also been dispatched to the earthquake site.
