French President Emmanuel Macron echoed Chinese President Xi Jinping's call to safeguard multilateralism. He said competition between the EU and China must not lead to political isolationism or a breakdown in world trade systems. The two leaders promised to work side by side with Europe. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and German Chancellor Angela Merkel also agreed that all sides should work together to oppose unilateralism.
