Zheng Zeguang, China's vice foreign minister, has summoned Terry Branstad, the US ambassador to China, on Friday and lodged solemn representations over Washington's plan to sanction a Chinese military organization and its head for buying Russian weapons.
The US State Department announced Thursday that it would impose sanctions on the Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission of China and the department's director, alleging that China had violated the "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act."
The US move is a blatant violation of the basic norms of international law and a full manifestation of hegemonism, Zheng said.
Sino-Russian military cooperation is a normal one between sovereign states, and the US has no right to interfere, he said.
The US practices have seriously damaged the relations between the two countries and the two militaries and seriously affected China-US cooperation in international and regional affairs, he added.
China will take all necessary measures to firmly defend national interests, Zheng stressed.
The US must immediately correct the mistakes and revoke the so-called sanctions, otherwise the US must bear the consequences, he said.
