For the sixth Wuzhen Theater Festival, one of the main attractions has been Popular Mechanics from Li Jianjun, an accomplished practitioner in China's experimental theater. In an exclusive interview with CGTN, the veteran dramatist talked about the new dynamics facing independent theater companies.
Debuting at the Poetry Square in Wuzhen's west end, Popular Mechanics is bringing Li Jianjun fresh acclaim.
The dramatist of some 30 years has drawn on Raymond Carver's short story but created a whole new narrative.

"The show continues my exploration over the past five years. It always fascinates me to examine regular people confronting their daily lives," said Li.
Running for four consecutive evenings since the festival's opening, the two-hour production was hailed by the theater professionals and critics. And Li Jianjun was also glad to see the reactions of those with far less intimate knowledge of the craft.
"The town has so many tourists, and most of them are experiencing the experimental theater for the very first time," Li noted, adding that "they offer very stimulating and valuable comments for us."
Based in Beijing, Li Jianjun has worked in theater since 1990s, and he is known for his bold use of the stage and visuals.

Since 2011, his New Youth Group has become a vital and sustained force in China's theater scene.
A stage professional for three decades, Li Jianjun has witnessed the emergence and evolution of China's experimental theater. He is delighted to see a new surge of interest over the past few years.
"Young people are becoming increasingly drawn to the theater. And there's a bigger variety and diversity in themes and subject matters," Li observed. "Also the audience is growing. Their curiosity is becoming serious interest in the art of theater."
