Germany beats Turkey to host 2024 European Championship

Germany has beaten Turkey in the race to host the 2024 European Championship, UEFA announced on Thursday in Nyon, Switzerland.
It was the fourth unsuccessful bid by Turkey for a major international soccer event.
Germany last hosted a global competition in 2006 when it came third in the FIFA World Cup.

As for the European Championship, the former West Germany staged the event in 1988 when the host was knocked out by the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
Twenty-four teams will compete for the Henri Delaunay Trophy in 10 cities in Germany in 2024: Berlin, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart.

Philipp Lahm, former captain of Germany's national soccer team, was appointed head of the organizing committee of the event.
Germany has won three European titles -- in 1996, 1980 and 1972, the most in history along with Spain.
