Group F winners Sweden took on Switzerland 1-0 and the Scandinavian side made it to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994 when they went on to finish third.
Both teams were wasteful in possession and guilty of the sort of poor finishing and unimaginative midfield play that caused boos and whistling around the St Petersburg stadium from as early as the 25th minute.
In the 66th minute, it was fitting that RB Leipzig winger Emil Forsberg scored the only goal of the game on a weak shot that deflected off Manuel Akanji and wrong-foots goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
"Well this really means a lot to me. It's paying off and that's really the best testament we can give. We're in the quarter-finals now and that's proof that what we're doing is really good." Forsberg said.
Sweden won 1-0 and is through to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 24 years. A meeting with England awaits Janne Andersson's side in the next round.
