China hosted four diplomatic events this year: The Boao Forum for Asia annual conference in April, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Qingdao in June, the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September and the first China International Import Expo in Shanghai in November.
CGTN has analyzed the content of President Xi Jinping's speech at each of the four events and is visualizing the most prominent words in the tag cloud below.
The tag cloud identifies the issues or terms on which Xi placed emphasis. This offers a glimpse into how President Xi defines China's foreign policy.
A new chapter of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics
"Africa" was mentioned 117 times while "China-Africa" was referred to 38 times, as one of the events was focused on China's ties with the African continent.
"Cooperation" is the third most frequently used word in Xi's speeches. The term has become a buzzword in the country as the Chinese government seeks more interaction and engagement with countries around the world under such multilateral frameworks as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Win-win cooperation is the highlight of China's foreign policy in 2018, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a symposium on China's diplomacy last week, and the BRI proposed by President Xi has become the biggest platform for international cooperation.
"Open" was mentioned 45 times, "Opening-up" 23 times, "Openness" 22 times, and "Reform and opening-up" 18 times. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the country's reform and opening-up policy. Facing the headwinds of protectionism and unilateralism, China remains a staunch supporter of globalization, multilateralism, and the free trade system. From hosting multilateral events to attending international conferences in 2018, China has been conveying a clear and consistent message of commitment to further opening-up.
