Chinese President Xi Jinping said Tuesday that China is willing to deepen cooperation with Latvia on the basis of equality and mutual respect while meeting with Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis in Beijing, who is in China to attend the Summer Davos Forum.
Latvia is the first country in the Baltic Sea area to sign a memorandum of understanding to link up with China's Belt and Road Initiative.
Cooperation between China and the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) is an important component and a useful supplement to China-Europe relations, Xi said. China is ready to strengthen cooperation with Latvia within the framework of China-EU and China-CEEC cooperation.
Xi pointed out that as the world's two major stable forces and the two major economies, China and Europe should strengthen strategic communication, maintain mutual openness, maintain multilateralism through China-Europe cooperation, build an open world economy, and promote world peace, stability and development.
Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis sees huge potentials of cooperation between the two countries. He spoke highly of China's Belt and Road Initiative, and he also said that a good cooperation mechanism between China and Eastern Europe is vital for Latvia.
After the meeting, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation documents.
