The population of salamanders increased to over 3,000 in Xinjiang in 2018, a significant figure from the 100 recorded in 1996. Salamanders are listed as an endangered species under national second-class protection in China. To raise the awareness of salamander protection, China invested about 1.18 million U.S. dollars setting up a local salamander scientific research and education center in 2016.
