A society where concepts of marriage, fatherhood and nuclear families don't exist; a paradise where women rule. All this exists on the verdant shores of Lugu Lake in southwest China. Lugu is an alpine lake in the Daliang or "Great Cool" Mountains, shared by Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.

Several ethnic groups live along the lake's shore. But because of their relatively large numbers, Lugu Lake is considered the home of the Mosuo – often described as one of the last matriarchal tribes in the world. Mosuo women head up the household and make all the business decisions. Property is passed down through the female line. Mothers have 100 percent rights over the children born to them, who are raised by their mums and grandmas and aunts and uncles.

The Mosuo are best known for their "walking marriage," but it's perhaps the least understood aspect of their culture. In a "walking marriage," couples don't live together as woman and husband. Instead, a man will visit his lover's boudoir at night, and return to his mother's home before sunrise. Women are free to choose and change partners as they wish, so relationships can last from one night, to a lifetime. What a fascinating world it is at Lugu Lake – a world made even more mesmerizing by the exquisite scenery. The crystalline blue of the water, the gentle rustle of reeds, the undulant peaks in the background… China's Kingdom of Women is truly an untouched utopia.
