Thousands of birds stopped in Chifeng City of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on their northward migration tour.
Chifeng, which has numerous lakes and vast wetlands, is an important stop between the birds' wintering and breeding grounds.

The municipal government has taken active measures to protect the ecological environment in recent years, which includes cracking down on poaching and planting more trees.
"Chifeng is important for bird migration routes. Currently, more than 10 species on the state preservation list are in our city, including great bustards, whooper swans, demoiselle cranes, herons and mandarin ducks," said Hong Hai, director of the Forest Public Security Bureau of Chifeng.

Hong's bureau monitors the birds closely, patrols their resting areas and feeds them grains. According to the bureau, over 35,000 birds have stopped over in Chifeng on a daily basis.
