England striker Harry Kane scored a hat-trick as the Three Lions pummeled Panama 6-1 in their second World Cup Group G match.
The match played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium was lopsided from the early minutes. In the 8th minute, Manchester City’s John Stones scored his first international goal with a header off of a Kieran Tripper corner to give England the early advantage.
Shortly after the header, a foul in the box on Jesse Lingard opened the door for Kane to score his first goal of the match. The team captain became the first player to score a penalty in regular play for England at the World Cup since David Beckham in 2002. Kane put a blistering shot into the back of the net to put England up 2-0 in the 22nd minute.
Kane would score an equally impressive penalty in the first half stoppage time for his fourth goal of the tournament, putting him neck and neck with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku in the race for the Golden Boot. England would enter the break leading 5-0. His third goal would come in the 62nd minute, making him just the third player to score a hat-trick for England at the World Cup.
Panama’s Felipe Baloy would score the team’s only goal of the match and first ever goal at the World Cup in the 78th minute, but it was far too little and far too late.
With the win, England pulls even with Belgium atop of Group G. They will play Belgium on Thursday. Panama will face Tunisia on the same day.
