Serena Williams alluded to the tough time she's had at the US Open in her speech at the awards ceremony. The penalties she incurred in this final were the worst in a match, but not the first as this was actually the fourth time the 36-year-old American great found herself involved in controversy at the US Open.
In the past, Serena has argued with umpires on multiple occasions and once even threatened a line judge.
Williams claimed her first grand slam in Flushing Meadows in 1999. Her first serious argument came when she played Jennifer Capriati in 2004. Serena hit a backhand down-the-line winner during the second set which was overruled as out by chair umpire Mariana Alves. It was one of several bad calls that went against Williams, who later received an apology.
Five years later Williams received a point penalty for a foot fault in the semi-finals against Kim Clijsters. Serena then blasted the Japanese line judge who made the call which brought up a match point that Serena went on to lose. She was later fined 82,500 US dollars and put on probation for two years.
In her 2011 final against Sam Stosur, Williams said to Umpire Eva Asderaki "You're a hater" after Asderaki called "hindrance" to Serena. The Grand Slam Committee later fined her 2,000 US dollars.
