Mick Schumacher claimed his first Formula 3 win over the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps. The victory comes 26 years after his legendary father Michael earned his maiden F1 victory at that same circuit. It was a fitting triumph, as the 19-year-old snagged the checkered flag with several bold overtaking maneuvers, after starting sixth on the grid.
China's Zhou Guanyu started in pole position, in the weekend's third and final race at the Belgian circuit. Despite a wheel bump on lap one, Schumacher was soon up to third place, and chasing Prema Theodore teammates Marcus Armstrong and Robert Shvartzman. At the start of the ninth lap, Shvartzman passed Armstrong to grab the lead, with "Mick the Quick" working his way into the second position. Schumacher then escaped Shvartzman's slipstream, and pushed past the Russian for first place, in the latter stages of the race.
The teenager was able to hold on to his lead after passing the Russian to record his first F3 win after 45 attempts and after making his series debut last year. The victory comes at a venue synonymous with his father, who often referred to Spa as his "favorite track."
