A massive influx of “Golden Week” tourists and traffic jam made social media headlines after pushing major tourist sites in China to a seemingly breaking point just two days after the week-long National Day holiday began, as some seven million – close to half of China's population by estimate – is expected to be traveling.

Over 100 million people have traveled to China, spending a total of 103 billion yuan (about 15 billion US dollar) just on October 1, according to the China National Tourism Administration.

On Chinese social media, videos and pictures of tourists jams packed in various locations bringing traffic to a standstill went viral.

The move to waive toll fees on highways during the seven-day holiday has led to heavy traffic flow on the roads across the country.

In southwestern Sichuan Province, more than 26,000 cars reportedly flocked to Daocheng County, controversially hailed as the last Shangri-La, on October 1, causing severe traffic jams on a twisted road that lasted about 24 hours – as seen in the video.

In the Badaling section of the Great Wall in Beijing, the most visited section of the Great Wall, about 37,000 tourists flooded the site and caused bottlenecks.

West Lake in Hangzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province received 49,300 tourists on the holiday's first day, on track to be the most popular domestic tourist attraction in China.

Nanjing Road, believed to be the most bustling shopping street in Shanghai, also embraced a huge number of visitors. The street looked dramatically packed with people moving shoulder-to-shoulder, and the crowd had to be kept in order by a guard who posed as “human walls” in a busy intersection.

During nationwide travel rush, a Chinese woman caught Internet's attention while stranded in heavy traffic jams in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, as she opted to perform Tai Chi on the highway.
