Believe it or not, breakdancing may well become an Olympic event at the 2024 Paris Summer Games. The organizer of the Paris Games announced on Thursday that breakdancing has been proposed for inclusion among the 28 disciplines to be hosted at the quadrennial event in the French capital.
Three other sports – surfing, skateboarding, and climbing – which will make their maiden Olympic appearance at the 2020 Tokyo Games have also been added to the list of proposed events by the Paris Games officials.

According to the Paris 2024 Olympics Organizing Committee, the four sporting disciplines would reflect the French capital's identity and help them take the Games out of the stadiums and bring them onto the streets as breakdancing is a physical form of street dance, often performed to hip-hop music.
Tony Estanguet, the head of the Paris 2024 Olympics Organizing Committee, said: "I think that today, breakdancing will really bring something completely new, which again makes it possible to reach a new target. It's a very urban and spectacular sport with a very creative dimension, and from the start, Paris 2024 is trying to bring a lot of creativity and to do things differently. We are trying to bring a new touch, a revolution."

Dancers participate in "battles", a breakdancing jargon for one-on-one dance matches, and are evaluated by judges with scores. Interestingly, the event had already appeared at the Olympic stage at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. It will become an official Olympic sport in 2024 if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) backs the organizers' proposal to include it in Paris, which will become the second city after London to host three Olympic Summer Games.
Meanwhile, the discipline has already established a niche in the heart of Paris, where breakdancing teacher Jonathan Guebri-Zea teaches 10 students. For two hours at a time, the dancers' somersault and stand on one hand, and spin on their heads as they aim to perfect their art. He said, "If breakdancing becomes part of the Olympic Games in 2024, it will be a great thing and will give it a complete status as a sporting discipline. And it will show the value of a lot of things, put forward dancers and clubs who are in the shadows and are currently struggling to survive."
However, the sports proposed by Paris 2024 will be reviewed by the Olympic Programme Commission, and subsequently, a recommendation by the Commission will then be presented to the IOC Executive Board in March. If they accept, then it will be presented to the IOC Session, where the final call over its inclusion will be taken.
