China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently paid a two-day visit to Pyongyang to discuss the situation on the Korean Peninsula. There he met with Kim Jong Un, more than a month after the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) visited Beijing.
Wang, also state councilor, congratulated Kim on the success of the recent inter-Korean summit, which resulted in the "epochal" Panmunjom Declaration, which could potentially end the Korean War. Kim says denuclearization is the country's ultimate goal.
"There's been momentum for positive developments on the Korean Peninsula as of late,” said Kong Xuanyou, Chinese vice foreign minister. “We believe such developments can help with political settlements and the management of tensions. Like other members of the international community, we welcome such developments."

In a meeting with DPRK Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, Wang Yi said Pyongyang had Beijing's full support.
Wang said China supports efforts to officially end the Korean War. He also said China backs the DPRK's decision to focus more on economic development and the resolution of the nation's legitimate security concerns, as the country moves towards denuclearization.
The Chinese foreign minister said he wants to see talks between the DPRK and the United States result in substantial progress.
“China welcomes and supports any move that is conducive to promoting dialogue between the relevant parties on the Korean Peninsula and the efforts to promote the political settlement of the Peninsula issue,” said Hua Chunying, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
