China says DPP should make self-criticism, get back to right track

Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration should "make a profound self-criticism and get back to the right path of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations," a Chinese mainland spokesperson said Wednesday.

"The DPP should face the strong aspiration of Taiwan residents for sharing the benefits of the peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait, and improving the island's economy and people's wellbeing," said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, at a press conference.

"The DPP should get back to the political foundation of the 1992 Consensus and to the right path of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

"Since it took power, the DPP administration has unilaterally undermined the political foundation of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, supported and connived at attempts for 'Taiwanese independence' in various forms, obstructed and restricted people-to-people exchanges across the Strait.

"It has also sought foreign intervention in cross-Strait affairs, repeatedly made remarks fraught with the 'two Chinas' separatist fallacy and confrontational thinking.

"Such acts aggravated hostility between Taiwan and the mainland, brought cross-Strait relations to a grave and complex situation, and seriously harmed the interests of Taiwanese compatriots.

"The way out for the DPP and its administration only lies in abandoning separatist attempts at 'Taiwanese independence' and accepting the 1992 Consensus."

Mainland welcomes city-to-city exchanges with Taiwan: spokesperson

The Chinese mainland welcomes exchanges and cooperation with Kaohsiung and other cities and counties in Taiwan, Ma said in response to Kaohsiung Mayor-elect Han Kuo-yu's comments about recognizing the 1992 Consensus.

Noting that the 1992 Consensus is the political foundation of the peaceful growth of the cross-Strait relations, Ma said city-to-city exchanges and cooperation should be based on a correct understanding on the nature of the cross-Strait relations and the nature of such exchanges.

Ma said people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should further promote mutual visits, deepen business cooperation and strengthen exchanges in various fields.

Responding to questions about a city forum between Shanghai and Taipei, which will be held in late December, Ma said the forum has been held annually since 2010 and serves as an important platform for exchanges between the two cities and people across the Strait.

Ma said he hoped the forum will further deepen exchanges in various fields between the two cities and promote the interests and wellbeing of people across the Strait.
