At the ongoing Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in the Italian city of Turin, China's Yu Songnan won a bronze medal in the men's 500 meters. Yu was outpaced by the S. Korean duo of Lim Hyo Jun and Kim Gun Woo, who finished first and second respectively.
Yu was competing with the two prolific S. Korean skaters, and also Canadian ace Girard Samuel. The Chinese started in lane two and stayed in third place. Lim kept in control and was able to take the lead all along.
With one lap left, Samuel ran off the track while making a turn. Yu moved to the second spot in no time and had the chance to grab the silver. But he fell before crossing the finishing line in a collision with Kim; he was still good enough to finish the race on his knees and so won a consolation bronze.
The Qingdao native won the only medal for China with a time of 41.744 seconds.
Meanwhile, at the ISU World Single Distance Championships, China's Ning Zhongyan made his tournament debut in the men's 1500 meters and finished sixth overall despite surpassing his previous best time of one minute and 46.09 seconds with his latest record of one minute and 44.276 seconds. The title went to Dutch skater Thomas Krol.
