Participants for the men's 100-meter race of the 2018 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League Shanghai on May 12 were confirmed by the agency on Sunday. 22-year old US star Christian Coleman and Jamaica's gold winner Elaine Thompson have all decided not to attend the event because of physical issues.
Coleman won the silver medal in the men's 100-meter race at the World Athletics Championships on August 5, 2017, by finishing the race with 9.94 seconds. He defeated Usain Bolt at the farewell race for this Jamaican superstar, only losing the golden medal to his compatriot Justin Gatlin who finished the race in 9.92 seconds.

Coleman finished nine 100-meter races within 10 seconds in 2017 and has shortened his personal best for the 200-meter race to 19.85 seconds, according to IAAF. His absence from Shanghai will cost Diamond League some highlights.
Having won gold medals at the women's group for women's 100- and 200-meter races at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, Elaine Thompson was planning to vie with Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers in Shanghai in the 200-meter race. However, she had to remove herself from the eve due to physical issues.

28-year-old Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian will appear on the track for men's 100-meter race in Shanghai on May 12. He finished two such races in 9.99 seconds in 2015 and won the champion in the same event in 2017 by defeating several sprinters including Justin Gatlin with 10.09 seconds. Su made his first attempt at the outdoor 100-meter race in Hong Kong on Sunday and won with an easy 10.28 seconds.
The following nine sprinters will compete in the men's 100-meter race of 2018 IAAF Diamond League Shanghai on May 12: Su Bingtian and Xie Zhenye from China, Justin Gatlin and Isiah Young from the US, Yoshihide Kiryu from Japan, Ramil Guliyev from Turkey, Andre De Grasse from Canada, Reece Prescod and Chijindu Ujah from UK. As seven of them have finished 100-meter race within 10 seconds, the competition on May 12 will be tough.
