China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) should strengthen communication and coordination to promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establish a peace mechanism as well, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Saturday.
Xi made the remarks while meeting with ROK President Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in Port Moresby, the capital of the Pacific island country of Papua New Guinea (PNG).
The current Korean Peninsula situation has seen positive changes and the nuclear issue has been brought back to the right track through negotiation and consultation, Xi added.
Speaking highly of China's support for the positive measures to promote the easing of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Moon said his country has common interests with China in maintaining peace and stability in Northeast Asia.
Xi also called for China and ROK to jointly make positive contributions to regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.
Both sides should focus on promoting the Belt and Road development and speeding up the second phase of the free trade agreement between the two countries, said Xi.
Moon echoed Xi's stance on bilateral cooperation and showed a willingness to deepen coordination with China.
