The great animal rescue: People risk their lives in the snow hazard

By Li Yunqi, Xing Fangyu

Sitting at an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level, the Zadoi County of Yushu Tibet Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province is hit by an unprecedented snow hazard.

The land is frozen and covered by snow for more than seven months. The knee-deep snow buries the vegetation. Many herbivores die while hopelessly trying to forage for food. Both human and animals are suffering from this long and bitter winter.

This video follows Pema, an ordinary herdsman, and the remarkable actions he took to provide for the starving and feeble wild animals. There are many more people like Pema, who volunteered to help from all over the country.

Until this day, the damage of the continuous snow is visible in Zadoi, and rescue efforts continue on the plateau…

About the region

Zadoi County is part of the Sanjiangyuan region, which translates to "origins of three rivers." The three rivers refer to the Yangtze River, the Yellow River and the Lancang River. Zadoi is where the Lancang River (also known as Mekong River in Southeast Asia) originates. It is also referred to as "home of the snow leopard."
