JASON MOURNER "I was scared, I was scared, I was nervous to come here. I didn't know what it would be like and if everybody was going to be kind of, like, you know mourning, and kind of upset over what happened. I mean, it is good though so everybody come together and just kind of remember what happened." For those killed and injured, it was supposed to be a joyful time here. But all changed when a speeding van ploughed through crowds of tourists on the boulevard.
CARLOS TENA GALLARDO EYEWITNESS "It's an attack, my friends, an attack in the middle of Las Ramblas of Barcelona. There are lots of dead people along Las Ramblas, it's really awful, even kids, mothers and little kids dead in the middle of Las Ramblas."
ASH PATEL TOURIST FROM WASHINGTON "My wife and I are on holiday. We left our 15 month-old back in the States. And the only thing I wanted to do is live another day to see her. When we were hunkered down in the back of this man's shop, kitchen, it was terrifying. "
Hours later, another similar attack occurred in the seaside resort town of Cambrils. A woman died from her injuries. Police killed the five attackers. The twin attacks shocked the whole world, not just for their brutality, but also for the fact that the victims hailed from as many as 34 countries. As usual, world leaders have come out to condemn the attacks. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that wiping out the scourge of terror is truly a global issue now. It will take a while for every one of them to be identified and even longer to bring the perpetrators to justice, but at least tonight, the victims and their families are not alone .Rory Coen, CGTN.
