BJIFF 2019: Forward Future section promotes new talents

By Yu Fengsheng

At the ongoing Beijing International Film Festival, a special section called the "Forward Future International Screening Unit" aims to encourage and promote up-and-coming filmmakers. It will screen at least 10 new domestic and foreign films every year. Let's take a look at some of this year's highlights.

The Forward Future section was set up in 2014 to discover and promote new filmmakers, and encourage dialogue among young talents.

This year, it will screen 12 films from a selection of some three-hundred entries. Most of them are debut pieces of directors from countries like China, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Portugal and South Korea.

Director Zhu Yuanqing said, "There are no superstars in our films, so it's hard to get them into mainstream cinemas. But the Forward Future section gives us a good opportunity to present our works."

According to the organizing committee, several films will be premiered at Future Forward screenings.

All entries will compete for four awards, including Best New Film and Best New Director.

Moviegoers will also get to interact with the filmmakers and talent after the screenings.

This gives them the chance to find out more about the stories behind the films.

One moviegoer said,"I feel really happy because I get to learn more about the directors' inspirations and their feelings during the creative process."

Another said, "We were able to ask questions after watching the films, and sometimes the directors' answers were far more interesting than the films themselves."

The film festival is a special platform for moviegoers and filmmakers to share ideas. As many directors say, they learn a lot from fans.
