The Fengdu Temple Fair dates back to the Eastern Han Dynasty, nearly 2,000 years ago. A major highlight in its modern edition is the Street Wedding Parade of Emperor of the Underworld. It involves themed floats and dressed-up phalanxes of characters. The fair was listed as a national intangible heritage in 2014. The ancient town of Fengdu boasts a large complex of shrines, temples and monasteries dedicated to the afterlife. It combines the beliefs of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.
