At least 25 people were killed and many others injured after a passenger bus carrying them fell into a canal in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, local authorities said on Saturday.
As many as 35 people were aboard the bus that was on its way to Shivalli from Mandya, ANI reports.
The cause of the incident was not immediately clear, but officials suspected the driver could have been at fault.
"I believe the driver was not driving properly... I will find out," Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said.
The local fire department is conducting search and rescue.
Road accidents kill some 150,000 people in India every year, partly due to poor infrastructure, substandard road maintenance and aversion to wearing seat belts.
