Italian Dominik Paris defends downhill title on home snow

Italy's Dominik Paris won the men's downhill World Cup for a second successive year with a total time of one minute and 55.21 seconds in Bormio, Italy, on Friday.

Paris trailed his compatriot Christof Innerhofer on the upper section of the icy course but was faster at the bottom and finished 0.36 seconds ahead of his teammate to claim for his second straight gold and third overall, as well as the 10th World Cup victory of his career. Switzerland's 2017 world champion, Beat Feuz, finishes third.

A victory in the Alps gave Paris his first in 12 months, but the final results were overshadowed by a dramatic crash earlier in the day. Slovenian Klemen Kosi began well but less than 10 seconds from the finish line he lost control and tumbled through two layers of safety netting before coming to a stop.

After swerving slightly to his left, the 27-year-old tried to correct his course only to drift too far to the right, lost control, and plowed through the protective barrier.

The competition was interrupted while the 2014 Olympian was airlifted to a nearby hospital with suspected facial trauma.
