Qingdao will host the leaders of the 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organization for a summit from June 9 to 10, with newcomers India and Pakistan. The SCO has become a more prominent regional organization with growing influence since its inception 17 years ago.
What has the SCO done when it comes to the mission of a shared future?
CGTN's senior correspondent Tian Wei recently caught up with the SCO secretary-general, Rashid Alimov. He shared his views on how the mission of a shared future is being played out among member countries of the SCO. He also talked about the meaning of a growing membership for the SCO.
"President Xi's proposal echoes with the principles of 'Shanghai Spirit,' it is based on the Treaty on Long-Term Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation. The Qingdao summit will mark five years since the Treaty was enacted," said Alimov.
SCO has done a lot to bring people closer to find common developed goals and boost dialogue between different countries, cultures and civilizations.
Alimov also pointed out the idea that the community of a shared future would help free countries from isolation. "Those who advocate for isolationism will lose. SCO's proposal for a common destiny sets an example of how nations can develop together. You've seen leaders having great attention to coordinate development in principle, that is what I understand about President Xi's community of a shared future," he said.
This year's summit will be the first time India and Pakistan will take part as full-fledged members. "The two countries have a great influence not only in Asia but also worldwide. On the one hand, India has great economic potential," Alimov added with uncertainty, "the two neighbors are actively fighting terrorism and extremism, their participation is significant."
The inclusion of India and Pakistan means the bloc now covers over 20 percent of all land on the planet, 25 percent of global GDP, and nearly half of world’s entire population.
