Bolivians flocked to the festival of Tinku, which means "encounter" in their Quechua language. Macha's small central square was transformed into a makeshift fighting arena to host a fist-flying, blood-flowing free-for-all. The fights carry on throughout the afternoon, with temporary truces made to allow the combatants to down a local corn-based alcoholic drink called chicha.
