As the caravan of migrants from Central America gather at the Mexican border city Tijuana, the city reaches the limits of its capacity. On Sunday, hundreds of people tried to cross the border illegally when they were stopped by tear gas and rubber bullets from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents of the United States. The Mexican government is starting to investigate the problem and will deport a certain number of migrants that were directly involved in the incident.
Rafael Bernal, staff writer at The Hill, introduces the current status of the migrants: They are allowed to move freely in Mexico as long as they have certifications for asylum and are accepted by the Mexican government at first. And he explains why the migrants move as a caravan - to avoid human traffickers and to stay together in order to become more visible in the world. The gathering in Tijuana, waiting for U.S.'s asylum seeking proposal is a freedom of choice by the migrants.
Laura Carlsen, the director of the Americas Program with the Center for International Policy, indicates that the Mexican government will start the investigation on the conflict. The U.S. CBP agents firing tear gas and rubber bullets have caused potential diplomatic tensions and humanitarian situations. The Trump administration seem to be underestimating the issue and not responding to the investigation.
On the other side, Jenifer Sarver, former deputy director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Commerce Department during the George W. Bush administration, and the principal of Sarver Strategies, suggests that there are two contradictory opinions on the situation. It is indeed devastating and heartbreaking to see the women and children affected by the incident, while on the other hand, many Americans would be outraged to see immigrants  storming the border. What Jenifer tries to imply is that the United States should enhance the capacity of their border control section. The cause of the conflict is great because of the dissolution of the laws and the lack of law enforcement. Therefore, the incident plays right into Trump's hands, which greatly helped to push a stronger border control and funding for the proposed wall.

Washington bureau chief with The Guardian newspaper, David Smith agrees that domestic politics plays a significant role in the situation. The situation helped to support the villainous description of the immigrants by Donald Trump since his presidential campaign.
Looking from the perspective of Mexico, the voices start to diversify. Laura points out that there is a rising voice of racism and xenophobia in Tijuana. The local population also has growing concerns. The new government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador will be facing tremendous challenges. Donald Trump's tweet on “permanently closing the border” crashed the stock market and Peso last weekend. The crisis is putting Obrador's “don't rock the boat” policy with the U.S. in jeopardy.
Rafael worries that Donald Trump really will put his words into action because of national security concerns. He warned that closing the border will create a great financial crisis in Mexico, and further worsen the economic status in Mexico, which would possibly put Mexico in a similar social instability similar to the countries where most of the immigrants are coming from.
Jenifer also thinks that Trump's statement is ridiculous. She believes that Trump fails to recognize the close bond between U.S. and Mexican economies, and it will further backfire for the U.S. economy. Also, this could be a bad symbol of isolationism to the rest of the world. Jenifer, therefore suggests that both U.S. and Mexican leaders should be bold and figure out more comprehensive immigration reforms. However, David believes that the reforms face huge obstacles because of the divided government between Republicans and Democrats. He also predicts that over the next two years there could be more turbulent situations over the border, and no one seems to have a chance to change it.
