The carcass of a gray whale washed up on the normally pristine beaches of Malibu, California, drawing crowds of onlookers. According to the Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute, the whale is roughly 40 feet (12 meters) long. Officials plan to perform a necropsy to determine what caused the animal's death. Gray whales typically migrate north along the coast of California from March through May.
