Unexpected by most, Gareth Southgate led England to the semifinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Thanks to that, England’s Football Association (FA) is offering a new contract to their manager, reported Daily Mail on Saturday.
The new contract will raise Southgate’s salary to 6.55 million US dollars a year including bonuses and make sure that he will coach the team for the 2020 UEFA Championship and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. “Gareth is due a new contract and both sides want to get a deal agreed quickly,” a source close to the FA told Daily Mail.

Southgate signed his current contract with the FA in 2016 with a yearly pay of 2.27 million US dollars including bonuses. The FA put a built-in break option in the contract so they could replace him with minimal cost if he failed to meet their expectations at the World Cup.
Meanwhile, the FA has been working on a settlement to help their players get out of an image rights contract that is worth 7.86 million US dollars. For the past decade, English players had to get access to commercial work through an outside agency called 1966 Entertainment, which will continue to play this role until 2030, according to the contract.

After the World Cup, the FA hoped that they could cooperate with players over commercial opportunities in a more direct way instead of taking everything to a third-party agency. According to Daily Mail’s source: "It is in the interests of all parties to agree a deal, so we need to come to a figure which compensates 1966 for loss of revenues."
