China's sports authorities outlined priorities for the next few years at a national meeting on Thursday.
Gou Zhongwen, the minister of General Administration of Sport of China, said the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are the three main objectives from a national sports perspective, with more impetus placed on the summer Olympic Games in Japan in two years' time.
Gou said, "Right now, we primarily need to focus on the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, so training and competition among all of our sporting events should be geared towards the Tokyo Games. Meanwhile, we also need to maintain our advantage in certain events, work hard to improve at other events, and further develop in events where we have chances to win medals."
Regarding the Olympics, a consensus has been reached that all events need detailed plans and preparation. This includes the hiring of top coaches, high-quality training, participating in top-level international competitions, a thorough study of competition rules and regulations and a well-schemed analysis of potential competitors.
