Even though February has yet to come to an end, China's box office for the month has already surpassed 10 billion yuan, or 1.5 billion U.S. dollars. Leading the pack of top-earners is "The Wandering Earth," a sci-fi space opera set in the near future. It's also garnering acclaim across the Pacific Ocean.
Since its North American debut on February 8, "The Wandering Earth" has caused a sensation among the Chinese communities in the U.S. and Canada. In mid-February, it became the highest grossing Chinese movie in North America in the past five years.
"I am deeply impressed by the creativity of the story. In the movie, I've found that today's Chinese filmmakers are so bold in their storytelling. I felt they've broken all the molds and stereotypes... Through all the effects and the concepts, they're raising bold questions, about the future, humanity, and the global community. I've found it very refreshing. It truly inspires me," a moviegoer said.

"The Wandering Earth" has also made a stir outside of the Chinese community, including both sci-fi enthusiasts and regular moviegoers.
On social media, many made positive comments on the storytelling and special effects of "The Wandering Earth." Some even went so far as to claim it's an equal to the "Star Wars" series.
