One day after China sentenced a Canadian drug smuggler to death, the Canadian foreign minister made a formal request for clemency. In response China, once again, made its stance clear and urged the North American country to respect Chinese law.
The incident took place in China, and thus it has to be ruled according to Chinese law, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Wednesday, reiterating the detrimental effects of drugs.
If the Canadian side believes the death sentence is “inhumane” and “inappropriate” for someone who smuggled over 222 kilograms of methamphetamine, is it humane and appropriate to take more people's lives from drugs, Hua questioned.
Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, a Canadian citizen, was sentenced to death on Monday for smuggling over 222 kilograms of methamphetamine in China in 2014.
According to Intermediate People's Court of Dalian City in northeast China's Liaoning Province, which handed down the sentence, Schellenberg's properties will also be confiscated.
