Red-footed boobies, which are under national protection, have been using Dongdao Island in China's southernmost city as their main breeding grounds in the country. As suggested by the name, the adults of the species always have red feet. They are regularly found in the tropics, and breed in coastal regions, especially islands. Thanks to ecological protection, the number of red-footed boobies in Dongdao Island grew to over 100,000 from 30,000 in just over a decade.
