Thailand ended absolute monarchy with a revolution in 1932. Since then, it has been a constitutional monarchy. The king is not only the head of state but also the head of the military and the Chakri Dynasty, Thailand's ruling royal house. He is also seen as the patron and guardian of Buddhism, Thailand's official religion. Criticism of the monarchy is punishable under the law with up to 15 years in prison.
