Significant progress has been made in the investigation of Canadian national Michael John Kovrig's case. Kovrig is suspected of involvement in activities endangering China's national security, local media reported on Monday citing officials.
Since 2017, Kovrig has often entered the country with ordinary passports and business visas, stealing and spying on sensitive Chinese information and intelligence through people in China.
Michael Peter Todd, an important intelligence associate of Kovrig, provided information to him. Kovrig has been suspected of stealing as well as spying on state secrets and intelligence, and has seriously violated Chinese laws.
Chinese officials stressed that China is a country under the rule of law and will resolutely crack down on any illegal and criminal activities that seriously endanger national security, local media reported.
At the same time, Chinese officials said it will strictly handle cases according to law and in a civilized manner, and fully protect the legal rights of John Kovrig and Michael Peter Todd, and arrange consular visits and other related matters in accordance with the law, according to local media.
