The Iran nuclear deal will be back in the headlines this week as President Hassan Rouhani visits Europe to gauge progress in keeping the agreement alive. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel will see if her interior minister Horst Seehofer follows through on his threat to resign over migration policy – a move that could have major consequences for her coalition government. At the end of the week, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will travel to Germany, after attending the China and Central and Eastern European Countries heads of government summit in Bulgaria.
It is a big week for Mexico, with exit polls suggesting Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is the country's new president. The British cabinet is due to hold crunch Brexit talks on Friday, meanwhile, and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected in the DPRK to follow up on the Trump-Kim summit

Monday July 2

Results from elections in Mexico are expected to trickle in, with populist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador the favorite to claim the presidency at the third attempt. Analysts have identified congressional elections as key – if Lopez Obrador's National Regeneration Movement performs well he could be on course to make big changes, with fighting corruption high on his agenda. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani pays a visit to Switzerland, the start of a trip to Europe during which he and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will assess progress in keeping the Iran nuclear deal alive – and after a week in which there were protests in Tehran over the drop in the rial. Merkel and Seehofer will meet for crisis talks as the German chancellor fights to keep her coaltion government together. The second day of the African Union heads of states meeting will take place in Nouakchott, Mauritania, with French President Emmanuel Macron expected to make an appearance. President of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajcak will continue a three-day visit to China, while the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation on Rule of Law is scheduled to begin in Beijing. US President Donald Trump and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will hold talks at the White House, with trade and NATO – ahead of next week's NATO summit in Belgium – on the agenda.

Tuesday July 3

A new Polish law, potentially forcing around a third of Supreme Court judges to retire, is due to come into effect. This comes a week after the country's government was quizzed over judicial reforms by other EU states. Macron will move on from Mauritania to Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria.

Wednesday July 4

Rouhani visits Austria as part of a tour to seek guarantees on maintaining the nuclear deal – Vienna is home to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN watchdog which polices the accord. Migration was big news in Europe last week, but also in Jordan – the Middle Eastern country indicated it could not take more refugees from Syria. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi is due in Moscow to meet Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, days after helping to mediate talks between Syrian rebels and Russia. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will address the European Parliament amid tensions between his government and the EU. The International Criminal Court in The Hague is expected to sentence DR Congo's former vice-president Jean-Pierre Bemba, acquitted of war crimes, but found guilty of bribing witnesses.

Thursday July 5

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will travel to Bulgaria for an official visit and the Seventh Summit of Heads of Government of China and Central and Eastern European Countries in Sofia, before traveling to Germany later in the week for the fifth round of China-Germany inter-governmental consultation. Merkel will have a busy day, hosting Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, one of the biggest critics of her refugee policy, and British Prime Minister Theresa May. EU leaders agreed last week to step up preparations for the possibility that Brexit talks would collapse. The official results of the June 24 Turkish parliamentary and presidential elections, won by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will be announced.

Friday July 6

Bulgaria will host the seventh annual summit between China and Central and Eastern European countries. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected in Pyongyang to follow up on the Trump-Kim summit, while in Washington monthly trade balance data is scheduled to be published. In Britain, the Cabinet will again attempt to agree on a unified Brexit strategy.
