The twin blazes Mendocino Complex in Northern California became the largest wildfire in the state's history on Monday, according to state wildfire officials.
The Mendocino Complex Fire, made up of two separate conflagrations merging together, ignited on July 27. The flame, about 100 miles north of San Francisco, rapidly raged to 283,800 acres, an area nearly the size of the sprawling city of Los Angeles, and burned 75 homes, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) said.
While the fire is still growing in this fire season, the fire crews will try to increase suppression and hold current containment lines, CAL FIRE said.
Further north in the state, the deadly Carr Fire has scorched more than 164,400 acres of land since July 23, and killed seven people along the way.
Several thousand residents have been evacuated as the fires swept across the state, and some have been given permission in recent days to return to their homes.
